No Literal Translations

If you want the actual translation from Spanish to English, this book is probably not for you. For example, in the first story, when the narrator was speaking of Normandy, he says in Spanish that it is where food has always been important. But the English translation says it’s where eating was a big part of his family life for as long as he can remember. There's a subtle difference there. Another time, the narrator mentions his family and how they would eat together, he says in Spanish that the major moment of a shared meal was when the cheese was served. In English, he only says that his favorite part of the meal was always when the cheese was brought to the table. The English translation did not include “shared”. The Spanish seemed to include the entire family in the experience, but the English left them out. Anyway, I always prefer literal translations, rather than translations that leave some nuances out, just to sound better. I already know English, so if it sounds off, that's okay. Spanish is what I'm trying to perfect.

This book has helped me become more familiar with the Spanish language. I like having the translation right there so I can immediately check to see if I had the right understanding of the Spanish text, and learn any new words.
