Mr. Chiantaretto is a master of the dark suspense.

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to read and review Death of the Spirit by Rick Chiantaretto. Death of the Spirit is the second book in the Crossing Death Series. I found it most necessary to read book one, Death of the Body, to understand the progression of events through Death of the Spirit.

Mr. Chiantaretto is a master of the dark suspense.

His characters are well developed and the worlds that they inhabit are filled with details that only a master could supply. My attention is sometimes difficult to hold when making my way through several volumes, but with the Crossing Death series, and especially Death of the Spirit I found myself unwilling to put the books down and lost sleep during the days that I was focused on what would happen next!

Mr. Chiantaretto has a fangirl for life and I know that the next volume(s) will be as eloquently penned as his current works are.

I definitely recommend Death of the Spirit by Rick Chiantaretto, and Death of the Body as well, as give five dark and powerful cups of Room With Books coffee.

Don't wait to pick up a copy. Stop what you are doing and get Death of the Body and Death of the Spirit and you'll be hooked as well!

Wonderful

Death of The Spirit is the follow up to the amazing book Death of The Body, and after reading it I am happy to say that it's just as entertaining as the first.

This book pulls you in right from the start and doesn't want to let you go. Even once it's over, this is the kind of story that leaves you speechless and constantly thinking about what might come next.

Normally with books you have an idea what what's going on or what's going to happen, but with this story there are so many different twists and turns that leave you not knowing whats going to happen next. It was refreshing to read a story like that.

One of the big things that I love about the way this author writes, is how he took this character of Edmund and uses him to give you that lead that you love and are willing to follow through anything, and then give him this huge twist that leaves you reeling but still willing to follow him through that as well as anything else that comes his way.

This book, like the first one before it, is a truly wonderful read, and I can't wait until I get the chance to read the third one and find out what is going to come next for these wonderfully written characters.

The demons there will suit your fancy

Have you ever struggled to write a review simply because you felt there weren’t enough words in the universe that could describe how fantastic a book really is? I am having that problem with Death of the Spirit. There’s so much I want to say, but the words just don’t seem to do the book justice. I’m going to try again because I seriously need someone to understand just how much I loved this book! There’s something about Rick’s writing that abductions the reader and transports them to a world of beauty with horror scattered around, leaving you with pure morbid fascination. The darkness consumes you but trust me, you will love it! Rick is a master at fine tuning details which results in brilliantly clear visuals that will leave you in awe.

Death of the Spirit starts and ends with one hell of a bang! Many of my favorite characters from the first book (Death of the Body) made an appearance, two of which I never expected to see again! What I enjoyed most about this book was Edmund’s internal struggle. There is a fine line between good and evil and he is walking dead on it. I’m curious to see which way the scale will tip for him… he’s determined to do whatever it takes… but does he realize what’s at stake? There’s love, war, friendship, and hell all in one…what more does a reader need?!

Come to the dark side, my friends, the demons there will suit your fancy.

Dr. Amrutur Venkatachar Srinivasan, has functioned as a Hindu priest for four decades performing a wide variety of Hindu religious ceremonies of worship, weddings, housewarmings, and bhajans or kirtans. He has written extensively on Hinduism. Dr. Srinivasan's most recent publication (2011) is Hinduism for Dummies. His publication, The Vedic Wedding: Origins, Tradition and Practice, is widely acclaimed and won the USA Book News 2007 Best Book Award in the category of Eastern Religions. With a contemporary format for Vedic (Hindu) weddings which retains all essential Vedic rites in an hour long ceremony, he has blended this approach with those of other creeds in many interfaith weddings. In addition, he has published a series of booklets on How to Conduct Puja to ..... providing simple set of instructions to perform a worship ceremony to Soorya (Sun god), Shiva, Rama, Krishna, Ganapati, Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and the Navagrahas (nine planets).

A popular writer and speaker, Dr. Srinivasan has published/presented numerous papers on a variety of cultural, social and religious issues in the U.S. and India. He has given courses on the classical literature of India at the University of Connecticut and Wesleyan University. Principal founder member of the Connecticut Valley Hindu Temple Society in 1979, he also founded the Raga Club of Connecticut in 2006.

Unfocused and unilluminating

Dowis's book offers little more than distilled common sense. That alone is not necessarily a criticism: the same can be said of How to Win Friends and Influence People, which is a good worthwhile book.

The major problem with Dowis's book is that his garrulousness was left unchecked. Often he uses five times as many words as he ought to in his explanation of an obvious idea. Insightful ideas are buried under mounds of more-than-common sense. He often meanders into tangent after tangent. Chapters often lack a unifying structure--at odds with his advice not to overburden your audience with more than just a few points! Dowis needs an editor to cut out at least 50% of this book. As it stands, it is mind-numbing to slog through.

Finally, chapter 8 is an unfortunate exercise in hand-wringing anal-retentive pedantry. Plato's theory of forms was wrong, at least in the domain of language: words are more useful than they are correct. But Dowis believes in an ideal form of English, instated by the Creator, and since debased by the negligence of sinful men. Give me a break. Unless you're talking to a crowd of copywriters, nobody's going to bat an eye if you use "lie" where your 8th grade English teacher touting her copy of Strunk & White would have rapped your knuckles for not using "lay".

There is one redeeming quality in the book: Dowis did a good job of selecting well-written speeches. Don't buy this book, but if you've already bought it, read the speeches he includes and skip almost everything else.

I originally checked this out at the library and realized I needed it in my reference collection. It's well writen, informative and fun to read. The author walks you step by step through the process of writing a speech to giving it, along with useful tricks of the speech writers trade. I highly recommend it.

Ultimately, what stays with an audience, is the content of your speech. Richard Dowis, a former journalist and retired senior vice president of Manning, Selvage, and Lee Public Relations provides information to help you effectively collect, organize and shape content into powerful speeches. He urges you to consider first the purpose of your speech, what you really want the audience to walk away with. Then, to fit your purpose into the format and time allotted. You must begin by researching your topic, clarifying your purpose, creating an outline and identifying a strong thesis, or unifying idea. When organizing your speech the most important consideration is that it must be logically organized. He identifies several organizational strategies you can use. For example, Chronological order, the "Big Bang" where a shocking thesis is presented up front, and Cause-and-effect which outlines the causes of a problem, describes its effect and suggests a solution. He also provides the following guidance on writing your speech:

1. Begin Well: Your opening should establish rapport with the audience, set the tone, reinforce your credibility and arouse interest in your subject. 5 categories of opening are: novelty, dramatic, question, humorous and reference/quote.

2. Watch Your Language: Avoid Jargon and overly complex language. Try instead for a simple elegance. Be yourself.

3. Use Proven Techniques: The Rule of Three: Organize related thoughts into groups of three to make them more memorable and dramatic. Anaphora: repeat words or phrases at the beginning of several sentences.

4. When using statistics: make them interesting and meaningful, express statistics in terms your audience can understand, and avoid using too many raw figures in a row.

5. Closing the Speech: use your closing to reinforce your point, or to reinforce the goal of the speech. Most closings fall into seven categories: Summary, Wrap-up, Direct appeal, Thesis, Reference, Inspirational, and Humorous/Anecdotal.

6. Editing: When editing consider content, organization, style, language and grammar.

About the Author
Douglas Broder is the co-chair of the global antitrust practice at K&L Gates LLP. He has been practicing antitrust law and commercial and appellate litigation in New York City since 1977. Mr. Broder is the author of two earlier books on antitrust law and practice as well as of numerous book chapters and articles on antitrust and on written advocacy. For the past twenty years, Mr. Broder has served as the US law reporter for the monthly European Competition Law Review.
