AN INTRODUCTORY WATCHTOWER TEXT, WITH EMPHASIS ON 1975

This 1966 publication of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) is of the 5"x7", 380+ page format they favored through the 1960s. It is sparsely illustrated. With an initial pressing of 2,000,000 copies, it was intended for somewhat wide distribution.

Here are some quotations from the book, that often illustrate distinctive doctrines of the WBTS:

"According to this trustworthy Bible chronology six thousand years from man's creation will end in 1975, and the seventh period of a thousand years of human history will begin in the fall of 1975 C.E." (Pg. 29)
"(I)t is plain that Jesus Christ and his heavenly Father are married to different symbolic women. Thus Jesus Christ and Jehovah God are not the same Person, and they are not coequal members in a 'Trinity' of three Persons in one God." (Pg. 69)
"(Jesus) was not a God-man on earth; he was not part spirit and part man; he was not a hybrid heavenly and earthly creature. He was a pure man, whose life force had been transferred from heaven by the miraculous operation of the spirit (or active force) of almighty God." (Pg. 75)
"Then, too, before the misguided Jews had Jesus Christ killed on the tree, he killed his own self and offered the sacrifice to his apostles. Besides that, when in the future the Christian apostles performed the 'mystery' of transubstantiation and then ate the bread and drank the wine... they were the ones who became 'Christ killers,' and not the Jews whom the Catholics have in past centuries called 'Christ killers'..." This book was first introduced at the 1966 regional convention of Jehovah's witnesses.
It covers a wide array of topics that were discussed at that convention.
The most exciting topic (which moved this book like hot cakes)
Was the first time in watchtower history that there was the bold and attractive
declaration that the end of the "system of things" and the millenial reign
of Jesus Christ "should" occur by the autumn of 1975.

It lays the ground work for the watchtowers most recent prophetic embarassment.

There are dragons all over Anne McCaffrey's house. Some she's bought, but many have been made for her by adoring fans and given to her as gifts. I don't make dragons, of course. But whenever circumstances allow, I do try to bring her American bacon, something she can't get easily in Ireland, and something which she has taught all her friends there to love, as well! I remember the first time I went to visit her, when she was still living in her old, much smaller but very homey, house. My husband and I arrived at the doorstep, and she immediately began bustling about, frying up some of the bacon we'd brought and sharing a lovely late breakfast with us before sending us off to the hotel for a nap. She made us dinner that night, too--the one and only time in my life that I've actually liked shrimp cocktail. Maybe that's because if you squint your eyes and look sideways, shrimp are kind of dragonlike, and I was eating them in the right company!

Pern readers, don't miss this one!

When I first read this book, years ago, I remember being a little disappointed. It wasn't as good as the Dragonflight trilogy or even as good as the Harper Hall trilogy. I'm re-reading the series in chronological order now, and I want to warn people not to listen to the negative reviews!
Yes, it's maybe not quite as enjoyable, it tells stories of the less-pleasant sides of Pern life, but it also tells things that you must hear if you want the whole story. You must read Renegades in order to be properly set up for All the Weyrs of Pern. This is the book that, if nothing else, tells more about the initial excavation of Landing and the discovery of AIVAS, and it introduces Jayge and Aramina of the Paradise River Hold from Dolphins of Pern.
I enjoyed this book more on second reading than I did the first time. The Pern series is five stars. If you enjoy the series, don't skip this four star book based on negative reviews.

A Little Choppy, But Still a Good Read!

As long as the people of Pern could remember, dragons had fought Thread and kept people alive. Everyone lived in strong stone fortresses or caves because Thread wouldn't eat through stone. However, it had been hundreds of years since Thread had fallen on Pern and there were many who did not like to live behind stone walls, beholden to the Lord of the area and forced into careers that they did not want. Some, like Jayge Lilcamp's clan were traders. They traversed the length and breadth of Pern, bartering and taking messages to other holds. They were always welcome at holds, especially ones that were out of the way. However, when they ignored the warning that Thread was once again falling on Pern, his trader caravan was decimated. She found the solution to her problem in Aramina (seen in The Girl Who Heard Dragons short story), who could hear all dragons. But Aramina escaped from her and was safely ensconced at Benden Hold. However, Thella was not about to give up so easily...
The Renegades of Pern is, like Nerilka's story, a retelling of familiar events from unfamiliar points of view. I highly recommend reading Dragonquest, The White Dragon, and The Girl Who Heard Dragons before reading this one because it will make a lot more sense than reading this one first. It was interesting because all of the other books in the Pern series have been about someone who has a definite place in life on Pern: holder, dragonrider, harper, etc., but Jayge did not. He could do a little bit of everything and was very resourceful. I enjoyed hearing how Aramina made out in the end, even though I was very surprised at what ended up happening. Although Jayge, Aramina, and Thella were what I would call the "main" characters, there was also quite a bit about Piemur and Toric, Holder of the Southern Continent, and the explorations and events taking place in at Southern, which was interesting. My main complaint with the book was the huge number of multiple viewpoints. It really made the book choppy and I know that I really wanted to find out what happened to a certain character and then was suddenly switched to someone else, which is kind of frustrating. Still, The Renegades of Pern is very informative and it was interesting to see things from a very different point of view. Recommended for readers of the Pern series - if you are new to the series, this is NOT the book to start with!

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book!

This book, although confusing in the beginning, is a worthy link between The White Dragon and All The Weyrs. It is almost a summary of the first three books, starting before Dragonflight, and ending just before All The Weyrs. A must read for all Pern fans. All the Weyrs won't make sense without it. A truely wonderful book.

Dr. Bruce Burnett grew up with love for writing, baseball and science in small town Oregon. He pursued the latter two in college and received his PhD in 1992 from Yale University in Biochemisty and Biophysics. He recently returned to his love of writing in his first novel, The Lamb.

A Fictional Account of Our Times

I read this book, The Lamb, recommended to me by readers who had read The Da'Vinci Code. They said it compared well but was more true to life. The author wraps a story of our past, present, and future in politics and religion around a wonderful character, Josh, who matches the blood of Christ. Or, does he? You see, Burnett never really tells you there's a match. He let's you decide for yourself based on your religion and faith. This is more than a book that has religion in it. It is a novel that challenges what you think and believe. My friend's who have read this saw very different things than I did based on their beliefs. The author has crafted a story that makes you think. He has given me new incites of myself. And, the backdrop for the story is our times or close to it: war in the Middle East, religion becoming part of our politics, and freedoms ebbing away. All in a personal package about one (un)fortunate man who just desparately wants to find his wife who has been kidnapped. Josh may or may not be the Savior. But I savored every moment with this book. Give it two thumbs way up.

Mom Approved!

I am a memeber of a non-traditional book group...my family. Membership consisting of my four teenage sons, their friends, girlfriends and my Husband. If we read and enjoy a book, then everyone in our extended family has to read it too. And no, it does not take a lot of arguing about book selection either. Trust me, anything a kid wants to read is exciting to a parent.
We had just finished reading the C.S. Lewis books and were still on a high from that when The Lamb fell into our laps. Perfect. It is a first class story that tells us that we could all be part of one extended family! How, you might ask? Read it! The Lamb is about faith and love and all the kinds of things that matter to everyone. No boring stuff either. My kids loved the action and the science. We enjoyed disussing the hidden meanings and symbolisms Dr. Burnett poetically weaved into The Lamb.
As a parent I approve The Lamb for all ages.

Scary, True to Life, and God Help us if....

Burnett weaves present day geopolitics, religious involvement in our government, and modern genetic science into a story of intrigue and suspense about one of the greatest prophecies of the ages, the Second Coming of Christ. Is Josh Adon the Second or not? This is something the author leaves to reader to figure out. The way Mr. Burnett weaves his story into the occurences we see in national and international politics makes one wonder and fear the future. The story, however, is intimate about one scientist swept up into to circumstances beyond his control, the match to the DNA of Jesus. Burnett is a master story teller with dialogue that rings true with every page turning, suspense filled moment. The Lamb is a tight story that makes one think about faith, politics, personal choices, and finally what our government will be become in the next 10 or 15 years. I highly recommend this thrill ride with an ending that will leave you wanting a second book.

Beautiful, soulful look into the making of a man

This book captured my attention with the beautiful cover and the intriguing title. I have always known Amy for her Scottish Highland historical romances. When I read the synopsis I did not hesitate to pick up my copy. Koicto is a teenager, and much like teenagers of today he has a plan for his life and rankles when told his plan doesn't matter. Watching him mature into his roles as husband and chief is pure delight. Amy weaves scenes in your mind with a beautiful prose. The description of the people, their way of life and there land are compelling. The Nachee Nation is fictional and yet to the reader they exist.

She studied me."I think you are trying to put the litter before the dog."

"What?" Where did she come up with that?

"You have to take first things first. The way I see it is you should be happy because the Elders have arranged your match. Though you've got to be terrified because you've never met your bride." She held up her finger as if she'd had a brilliant idea. "I think you need to focus on one fact- you will be wed and have a lifetime for your love to grow."

I had to ponder her words. How did my little sister become wise?

Haiwee had me lie on my buffalo mat as she rubbed the oil into my skin from the same ornate pot Mother had used on the day I left for my rite of manhood. Her fingers were like magic as the tenseness in my shoulders eased and the strong smell of mint cleared my head.

She prayed aloud while she expertly painted my chest with the sign of masculine fertility, and accented my cougar claw scars to make them appear to be cougar tracks. "May the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow strength into your being. May you and your bride walk gently through the world and know its beauty all the days of your life."

Bright beautiful story of innocents, honor, bravery, survival and coming of age.

I loved the way this story unfolded, fast pace yet with detailed vivid characters. What a fun read, about a subject I knew very little about. I stopped and researched the terms that were new to me, and it became even richer. This writer did her research, and it translated into a wonderful easy escape with very worthy well intended characters so alive, I believed I was living a piece of my life with them for a bit. It left me feeling hopeful and smiling as true life does many times. Good story. Thank you Amy- Kenya Walker

Loved this Native American story of old.

This is a book that I would recommend to even the children to read. The research on this book was extensive. It is a web of Native American legends and stories that was well executed and told with passion. You will not be sorry that you have bought this book. It is a keeper!! Congratulations Amy on this book. Well done. I will have to get a paperback also.
