Dated, but "okay" for what it is.

Unfortunately, Nightmare on Elm Street memorabilia and books are hard to come by nowadays. This particular item is basically in black and white, and covers Nightmare on Elm Street 1-3 (A Nightmare on Elm Street, A nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors). In all it's not too bad. It does also include a couple of color plates in the middle, various trivia, promo materials, some plot synopses.

If you're really into Nightmare on Elm Street, I'd suggest trying to find a used copy of The Nightmare Never Ends: The Official History of Freddy Krueger and the Nightmare on Elm Street Films instead. At least that one covers up through I think Freddy's Dead (A Nightmare on Elm Street 6). Though doesn't cover A New Nightmare, as I recall.

Also, the Nightmare on Elm Street Collection is an extremely good set. While the movie discs have minimal special features (except perhaps DVD-ROM features?), the Nightmare Encyclopedia disc is actually rather good (lots of interviews, stills, promo materials, etc.)...

I found it difficult to teach from

Bennett writes well, but my students have struggled to appreciate this book. My difficulty with it as a teacher is that he is far too quick to highlight the problems with each of the theories. I believe students need first to grasp the thoughtfulness and even the beauty of each proposed moral theory. There is a reason why each one is a classic in itself and useful for thinking through our ethical conflicts. Too much initial critique of the theories feeds the individualistic story line that there are no better or worse answers to moral questions so we should all just go with our initial feelings. After using this for two semesters I'm moving to a different text.

Apart from being way overpriced this book is little real use to any student. The fact that it is written by someone teaching philosophy is, to put it mildly, disappointing and despite the glowing tributes paid by others on the back cover I suspect that this book has not been peer reviewed.

This book is not only badly written, it is inconsistent in its approach to an otherwise important subject and is riddled with invalid arguments - which for a book about philosophy is more than disappointing.

Bennett claims that he is interested in making ethics 'explicit' and in deciding what we 'ought' to believe there must be an attempt 'to explain what our views are, and defining them, is an essential part of ensuring that our views are the right ones' - which is ironic given the subject topic. Rather, what is delivered is the author's Western humanistic approach which, apparently, has all the answers; 'Those who dismiss the enterprise of ethics deny that ethics is an area in which there really are answers' - more irony.

Against this grand claim the author trivializes the morality of other cultures as examples of 'relativism'. He writes; 'Now consider a different culture - there are quite a lot to choose from - in which women are excluded from the main decision-making forums of their social group'. Readers are not enlightened as to which cultures Bennett actually refers but it is obvious that the author has not read anything by Lila Abu-Lughod, Professor of Anthropology and Women and Gender Studies at Columbia University. She is Palestinian and has lived with Bedouin people for years and testifies in any of her numerous books, that women, even in those societies which we in the West assume to be 'backward' cultures, particularly with respect to women, that women have a powerful say in social dicourse - often in very imaginative ways. But none of this stops Bennett claiming that who 'try to question these gender roles are treated with ridicule'. Well they might, but that is not the point Bennett is hoping to make which is, ironically, that morality is - relative. He writes, ' ... although it is important to question the moral beliefs through one's upbringing, it is another thing to say that we should be sceptical about all moral beliefs' at which point Bennett looses me.

In the Chapter on ethics and religion (Chapter 7) Bennett outline the arguments for the existence of God. These are well know and may be found in any book dealing with philosophy. There is nothing really new except that for some reason Bennett does not mention the most mentioned argument for the existence of God - Anslem's Ontological Argument. Why, if the matter of the proof of the existence of God is seen as important enough to raise concerning the matter of ethics, is this well-known argument missing from his thesis? I can only guess. I suspect that the ontological argument is bypassed as it raises the significant matter of the what is 'good'. The intricacies of the ontological argument are tricky, particular if you are a humanist and God is not the absolute 'good' then the only alternative is - Bennett? I can understand his reluctance in raising the matter but not to do so seriously compromises the book's contribution.

Bennett's brand of humanism undermines his appreciation of cultural context. In a convoluted text to do with biblical scripture (by which he means Christianity - Islam does not rate a mention) he concludes that the 'holy book' (apparently he cannot write 'Bible'), in order to be morally relevant, must be 'interpreted in a way that is compelling to us' and that 'religious texts cannot replace our moral understanding'. In this Bennett forgets that it was those same biblical texts that led, eventually, to his grandiose claims concerning morality and ethics.

My own work as an anthropologist in Australia provides me with an insight into Aboriginal culture which do not have a written culture as we in the West would understand the term - their culture is 'written' in the landscape. To understand, rather than gaining simply knowledge, is an aspect of philosophy. To understand that morality may be written in a landscape would be, I suspect, be beyond Bennett's understanding. Morality, as part of culture, is relative whether Bennett agrees or not. Failing to appreciate this fact demonstrates a severe weakness for anyone proposing to write on ethics.

Bennett does have some useful things to say but unfortunately what might be worthwhile is hampered by his own bias.

content not covered to pass the CCNP Exam / content that is there is disjointed

I studied off this book and took the CCNP ROUTE exam. Some concepts are disjointed and explained in multiple chapters of the book where I had to tie the information together myself. I even took my own notes and reorganized them into common sections so I could tie together the content. In some of this investigation I also found errors. One error was even in the errata of the previous CCNP book (e.g., EIGRP network 0.0.0.0 command). During the actual CCNP test it seemed that about 25% of the exam was not covered in the book (either wholly missing or the subject was covered lightly and the content of the exam question was not in the book). I have used Cisco Press in the past to pass exams. After this experience, I question whether I can rely on other Cisco Press materials to study and pass certifications.

Least Useful Cisco Press Book in My Library

I purchased this book to study for the new 300-101 test for my CCNP renewal. Having taken several previous CCNP ROUTE tests, and as somebody who has purchased dozens of Cisco Press books for self-study certification from CCNA to CCIE R&S written, this is far and away the least useful book in my library. The book has a rushed, thrown-together feel and the topics that the author chooses to cover are handled in a way that I find nearly unreadable, while several entire subject areas that I received exam questions on weren't even touched upon. Fortunately, I had taken the test before and have read Wendell Odom's excellent 642-902 guide -- had this book been my only resource for the 300-101 test I would have almost certainly failed (which is a serious departure from my previous experience with Cisco Press books).

I totally resent the fact the I wasted the expense on a CCNP test due to Cisco ...

Wish I had read all the review before taking the CCNP exam, I used this as THE authoritative source for the 300-101 exam, only to find out on the exam had a lot of content that was simply missing from the book!! How could that be??!! I used a third party book for the CCNA exam without issue, and thought Cisco Press would at least provide the learner the courtesy to cover all the topics in the exam in the official study guide!! I read this thing cover to cover, and spend months memorizing esoteric facts and only to be torpedoed by surprise questions completely missing from the book!! I am so angry at the author and Cisco for allowing an official study guide to be so misleading!! I also agree the organization of the book is less than ideal. But for goodness sake, at least cover the topics. It seems Cisco is intentionally making the book have less coverage so a learner have to pay extra source of material such as training courses to cover the exam. This is clear mis-representation!! I totally resent the fact the I wasted the expense on a CCNP test due to Cisco Press's poor study material. The Cisco exam process seems more like a low cost revenue generation exercise for Cisco than a learning/tutoring/certification of skill set opportunity.

Don't start deck project until you read this book.

I like this book. I got a quote from a contractor to redo my deck and it was well over 9k which seems very inflated to me. I bought this book and Im very certain with my ability with tools and design experience (Engineer in my day job) I would be able to do a comparable job for 1/3 the cost. If you are a DIY person, this is the book for you. I wouldn't start a deck project without it.

Great resource

Everything you need to know and great pics. Very well organized and easy to follow, with an overview section at the start and then chapters that breakdown each stage of the deck building process. Plus there are special sections in the back that go into detail on stairs, adding more intricate elements like curved railings, etc. Please note though that if you're planning a more complicated job on uneven terrain without prior experience, this book (and any, really) will only go as far as helping you understand how decks are built and not trouble shoot your very unique specific issues.

Six Stars! Extremely Lengthy And Detailed May Not Be For Everybody

I completely loved this book. I learned so much. I fancy myself a sort of history buff. Many times when people talk about something of historical significance, I feel internally, that I already know most of what they are talking about. However there are distinct exceptions. When I read books like this I feel like a true amateur! I don't mean that in a bad way whatsoever. David McCullough is really an excellent author.

I took some time to read the most critical reviews. Most of the critical reviews that had any actual content stated the book was too long and too detailed. I can respect that viewpoint. Therefore it is clearly a matter of taste. The reasons that others are critical are the reasons I love this book and others of this nature.

David McCullogh will go into a long relevant digression on a subject that is completely related. In this case he does this about another engineer named Mr. Eads, who built a bridge over the Mississippi at Saint Louis. There are similar digressions about the Civil War, New York politics and corruption, presidential elections, etc... I love all of that.

I have my own method of reading a book like this, but it adds to the costs. I purchased this book on Kindle and also purchased the Audiobook at the same time. When I am commuting, I listen to the audiobook, rather than the radio. I count my commuting time as reading time and I do not get frustrated in traffic. I cannot do this with every audiobook. I can't follow some of them without my full concentration and reading along. But this is an example of an audiobook I can do that with. I also feel it improves both my attention span and listening skills. If there is a word I cannot understand or a section I want to reread, I memorize the section and review it later on Kindle.

In summary this is an extremely lengthy and detailed book. If you really want to get "into the weeds" of history, it is well worth considering. If that will frustrate you, you may want to pass it up. Thank You...

Good book on the construction of a NYC icon

I mostly enjoyed this book, especially the first quarter and the last quarter. It is meticulously researched and as always, McCullough does a great job putting you in to the time period he is documenting.

In this case McCullough takes us back to 19th century New York City, comparing and contrasting Manhattan and Brooklyn. He explains the initial impetus for a bridge over the East River to connect the 2 cities, how it would affect the lifestyles and economies of both cities.

The book is covering an exciting time in America when large engineering projects were being accomplished which would lay an infrastructure which made the 20th century economy possible. He covers other bridge builders and their projects notably the Eads bridge over the Mississippi.

As a lot of people know the Roebling family sacrifices made the Brooklyn bridge possible. Mccullough
covers the life of German born Joeseph Roebling an educated engineer who emigrated to Pennsylvania and founded a community of Germans. After about a decade however Roebling went back into engineering and began a series of high profile suspension bridges, notably Roebling bridge in Cincinnati and a railroad bridge over the Niagara river.

When Roebling began work on the Brooklyn bridge his son was his main assistant – Washington Roebling. Unfortunately after his foot was injured in an on the job accident, Joeseph Roebling contracted gangrene and died. His son had to take over as the main engineer for the bridge and he accomplished it by using caissons to sink the foundation of the towers. At that time the medical issues associated with working in pressures greater than one atmosphere were not well understood. Washington Roebling basically sacrificed his life due to his becoming chronically ill from having worked in the caissons and suffering the bends repeatedly. He was bedridden for years, but still managed to manage the project from his home in Brooklyn.

There were some drawbacks to this book, mostly in the middle parts of it. I don't think that the book did a great job of describing the “how to” part of building the bridge. I had seen a special on the history channel on building the bridge. Without that I don't think the book would have made clear what was involved in the caissons and “spinning the wire” . Also the book gets a little bogged down in the politics behind building the bridge, the graft and corruption involved.

Overall though this was a good book to help you understand what went into building a great American landmark.

Do not buy the Kindle edition! Like others have stated, this book has lengthy, detailed descriptions that are hard to follow even by those with engineering experience. I believe the paper version has diagrams that may bump this book up to a 4-star rating for me. This was my first time reading a David McCullough book, and I appreciated the history of the bridge's construction which was clearly thoroughly researched. I could have done with a little less about the political and social history that was only loosely related to the building of the bridge. Those long, droning chapters could have easily been condensed and made the book much more focused and easier to get through. Overall, an OK read.
