About the Author
Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970.  Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors.  They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.
 
Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976.  That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now going into its tenth edition.  In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team.  Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects.  Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.
 
Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades.  Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau.  Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything.  Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

Excellent Textbook, Easy to Use

As a student in my first geology course, I find this book amazingly helpful. It is laid out well, the material interestingly presented, the writing style clear and concise. Technical terms are explained and concepts unpacked carefully. Best of all, the author tells the reader what to look for and reviews with "concept checks" the material as it is being read. The chapter reviews at the end are quite well done. My only suggestions would be to vary the order of the material. The chapter of plate tectonics, for example, would be better much earlier on, since much of the material depends on the concepts dealt with there. And there are a few places where technical terms that are not universally used (a problem in geology in general) could be identified with other equivalent terms that the student will encounter elsewhere. If this is in fact the case, I have not yet found out where and how it is done. Overall, an excellent text. I have the Kindle version, which works fantastically.

This book, with over 500 pages of text, is an excellent reference for all things related to geology. It's loaded with excellent graphics: charts, illustrations, pictures, graphs, all enhancing the rich and detailed text. Everything about geology is covered, from the formation and internal structure of the earth to the various rock types that make up the surface of our planet and much, much more. Erosion, weathering, glaciation, earthquakes, volcanoes, it's all included. Geology is all around us and the authors make the subject interesting, understandable, and very readable. This book will greatly enhance the knowledge of anybody who's interested in our planet.

If you buy a valid access code, it lets you read the newer (12th) edition online!

I took Geology 101 using this older edition even tho my class was using the 12th ed. The sub-sections inside a chapter are numbered in the newer edition but not in this one. I finished the class with no problem though :) In most chapters, the contents are very much the same!

Pleasantly surprised to find an ebook access code in it, it allowed me to read either 11th or 12th edition online -- Yay!

Paulara is not the female Tyler Perry but the African American Nora Ephron.

I strongly recommend that you read this book! From Charlotte Wilhite's struggle to determine whether her deaf son should have a cochlear implant and Jake Donnell's frank discussion on how his family should accept, rather than fix him, to Henning Irgen's life as a deaf teenager in Norway during the Nazi occupation. Also of note is Damara Paris' vivid description of an India-born deaf man and his struggle to prove his independence, Donna Platt's humourous take on her Phillipine name sign and the poems written by Rusty Wales, Carrie Pierce and Marianne Decher. A MUST read!

Excellent Book!

This book was one of the best books I have ever read! It is a potpourri collection of different deaf perspectives and perspectives from their family. Charlotte Wilhites moving story regarding all sides of the cochlear implant controversy as she considered whether to implant her son moved me to tears! Equally good was Henning Irgen's story about growing up deaf in Nazi-occupied Norway. Damara Paris (also an editor for this book) wrote beautifully of the struggle for independence for an India born deaf man.

Karsten Herr has studied brewing technology and mechanical engineering. He has worked for many years as an operations and production manager and as a commissioning engineer. Since 2004, he has been working as a freelance consulting engineer, training and coaching production companies. He supports production companies of all sectors, in discrete as well as in continuous industries. Projects on which he has worked range from complete production restructuring via optimizing individual value streams to one-off training courses on different topics on process and workplace organization.

He has specialized in the analysis of set-up procedures on machines and processes and the drafting of quick changeover concepts. He is regularly supporting companies with open and in-house workshops and analysis of set-ups and drafting of solutions for quick changeovers as well as running improvement projects of various scopes.

He also works as a lecturer at various universities and professional academies, where he teaches courses on organization and structuring of business processes, systems engineering and systems behavior, production organization and factory planning, and production optimization. His main focus is on Lean, TOC, TPM, QRM, and Six Sigma (Certified Black Belt).

He is has a master�s degree in management and organization from the TiasNimbas Business School, one of Europe�s top business schools.

Don't waste your money

Horrible book: big waste of money. It's written like a college term paper. It assumes you are already familiar with the material and provides a basic summary of how lean interactions work (but in the vaguest terms possible). There are no tips or guidelines on how to use Lean concepts at all, no examples to explain concepts, and no outlines of what you should actually do. By any other book than this, if you want to get useful knowledge (beginner, or advanced) about Lean.

About the Author

Jonathon Howard is Eugene Higgins Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and Professor of Physics at the Yale School of Medicine. He earned a Ph.D. in Neurobiology at Australian National University, doing postdoctoral research there as well as at the University of Bristol and the University of California, San Francisco. The Howard Lab uses highly sensitive techniques to visualize and manipulate individual biological molecules, seeking to understand the interaction rules that allow molecules to work together to form highly organized and dynamic cellular structures.The writing of Mechanics of Motor Proteins and the Cytoskeleton was inspired by Dr. Howard's teaching of a course on Cell Motility at the University of Washington.

This book breaks all barriers across disciplines

As the previous reviewer stated this book does break barriers across disciplines to help us understand how life works at the molecular level. Truly remarkable. Its lucid writing is bound to capture the interest of anyone who is curious to know how nature works at a molecular level. If you are a mechanical, electrical, chemical,software engineer, or engineer of any other discipline, this book would appeal for its very engineering flavor. It looks at the mechanics of living systems from an engineer's perspective. If you are a biologist or chemist, you will get a completely new perspective on how things work. Let me state a few concrete examples. Starting with the environment inside the cell.

The first thing Dr. Howard does is to the set the visual stage for us by clearly elucidating in numerical terms the forces at work inside a cell -think of a cell magnified a million times to the size of a football field(300 ft) and the things moving inside are all range from 1cm - 3ft . The force of gravity is at least a billion times smaller than the viscous force on a molecule - gravity is irrelevant in the world inside cells. For those of us who have read Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who, journey into the world of cells would be very much like visiting Whoville, except the kangaroo had its way and dipped the soft clover with its village, and all its little people living on it, into the barrel of oil - luckily it is not hot.

Now the question immediately arises, how do things move inside a treacle? Add crowding to that too! To give you a sense of the crowding inside a cell, a typical mammalian cell contains a billion individual protein molecules. Can diffusion alone do the job of moving stuff around? The answer is no. Diffusion only plays a role at short ranges but for long range movement inside cells, nature has devised a means of transport of hauling stuff around on cables (see Dr. Howard's recent excellent paper in Nature June 2011 on diffusion vs active transport - Turing's next step: the mechanochemical basis of morphogenesis). Cables that double as scaffolds too - nature assembles these cables inside cells and uses them to haul cargo around using energy from food we eat. Dr. Howard explains in great detail how nature dynamically assembles cables and how little nanomachines walk (rather strut) on them hauling cargo. This form of active transport is faster than diffusion - nature's solution that is ubiquitous in all forms of life - from single cells to multicellular life forms.

This is a must read for any person who is curious to know what is happening inside each cell in our bodies. Nature's engineering is bound to humble and awe even the best engineer among us and this book is a great start in that incredibly exciting journey.

Bridging the gap from physics to cell biology

I wish there was a way to give a book more than five stars, because if there was, this book would get them! One of the most important trends in cell biology in recent years is the study of mechanics at a single molecule level. Since most of the really interesting processes in cell biology, such as division and motility, ultimately are carried out by molecules that convert energy into motion, the question of how these molecules actually move has very broad implications and impinged on everyone. However, in order to understand this, one has to understand some basic physics which of course involves some math. The biologist who is interested in this subject thus has two, and only two options. one is to bury one's head in the sand and say its just too hard to understand, and the other is to read Joe Howard's book. Although the mathematical content is readily apparent, only the basics are needed to get started. The author has thoughtfully compiled detailed derivations at the end in an appendix, so that one can see the details without becoming enmired in them on first reading. Considering the potential difficulties of taking a "hard science" approach to cell biology, the book is remarkably easy to read, which is a tribute to the thought the author has put into presenting the subject in the most logical possible way.
In addition to being an excellent entry point for biologists into this subject, this book would also be an excellent resource for engineers who become interested in cell biology (like myself) because it presents many of the current research frontiers in cell biology from an essentially engineering perspective and using quantitative reasoning. Again, the author has taken great pains to present the subject in a logical way that does not require much prior knowledge about biology on the part of the reader. Thus, either for biologists who want to learn about the quantitative/physical approach to cell biology, and for engineers or physicists who want to learn how they can apply their type of thinking to problems of cell biology, this book is highly recommended.

The Children's Hour, a Great Play, is not for Cowards

Lillian Hellman's 1930's play of two boarding school teachers accused of being lesbians is not for the faint of heart or closed of mind. The play is very difficult to act, demanding of the two female leads absolute concentration, wide emotional range, and utter professionalism. It is also difficult to direct, as the script is very centered on dialogue with most of the central events occuring in the Greek style, outside of the scene. However, a skilled and dedicated cast and director can certainly create a beautiful and terrible prodution capable of seizing everyone in the house with the sheer force of its words. It is certainly just as fresh now, and perhaps even more so, than it was when it was written, sixty years ago. If you're looking to be challenged by a play, you could do little better than The Children's Hour.

"Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor"

Lillian Hellman's magnificent, heart-wrenching, ground breaking and beautiful 1934 play takes the aforementioned commandment and creates a stunning cautionary tale that is not for the weak of heart. The perniciousness of lying and the often tragic consequences therein form the spine of this, Hellman's first major success on the Broadway stage.
Concerning a scandal at a private girl's school, Hellman bravely dramatizes the scars and cycles of abuse which result not only from lying but also from ignorance and cowardice. As I prepare this script for production in the fall of 2004, I find its themes timeless and as hard hitting as any contemporary work.
In Mary Tilford, Hellman has created one of the American Theatre's great villians. She serves as the literary model for "Rhoda" in THE BAD SEED as well as "Abigail" in THE CRUCIBLE. She is the embodiment of souless evil, intent on destroying all around her in order to advance her own status. She is the type of character that can truly, to quote RICHARD III, "Smile and murder whilst I smile". As my cast staged a rough read through, the hisses and rage she inspires is frightening.
Poetic without being obscure or pretentious, the dialouge is crisp and direct. Hellman's characters are three-dimensional and her pacing and story-telling is impeccable. I hope our production will do this great play justice.
As for any potential readers of this play: don't hestitate. Add this to you theatre library immediately.

Delightfully infuriating.

I recently saw a production of this at a local high school. It is one of the most dramatic, engaging, and infuriating plays I have ever seen. If you cant stand to watch supreme injustice, this play is not for you. The accuser of Wright and Dobie has to be the one of the most despichable characters ever devised. all of the characters, from Wright and Dobie down to the Delivery Boy, are engaging and realistic. this is a play that shows perfectly the serious harm that can be caused by "little white lies", and how prejudice effects everyone, even if they arent a member of the victim group. An enlightening, depressing, beautiful play.
