Oxford Handbook of Urology (Oxford Medical Handbooks), by John Reynard, Simon Brewster, Suzanne Biers

Urology continues to be one of the most rapidly advancing specialities. Approximately 20% of all surgical operations and a similar percentage of surgical emergencies are urological in nature. However, often doctors have very limited experience of the many common and varied conditions encountered in this important surgical specialty. For the doctor or nurse expected to provide the initial assessment and management of a condition with which he or she has had very limited experience, this handbook provides an invaluable source of information and advice.

Covering a wide spectrum of diseases and their treatment in the field of urology and surgical aspects of kidney, bladder, prostate and scrotal disorders, this handbook aims to give a brief overview of many different urological subjects including urological emergencies, cancers, infections, children's disorders and kidney stone disease. It is designed so that it can be quickly and efficiently accessed by a range of professionals involved in patient care, including medical students, nurses, surgical and urology doctors and general practitioners.

Thoroughly revised for the third edition, the Oxford Handbook of Urology covers all recent guidelines and criteria including the significant advances in medical and surgical options that are now available to patients; key papers and national recommendations in the field of neurourology; expanded information on medical therapy of bladder overactivity with relevant anticholinergic drug trials and evidence; and brand new information on the subject of urethral diverticulum. An invaluable tool relevant not only to specialist trainees and specialist registrars on urology and surgical rotations, but also to general practitioners, emergency staff and the growing number of urological specialist nurses.

Review
The book covers the breadth of urology and its brevity for each topic makes it accessible to the generalist but it has sufficient depth (and good referencing) to be of use to specialist trainees. I regularly recommend this book to medical students and junior colleagues. BMA Book Awards 2014. Highly Commended Physicians appreciate practical and quite exhaustive sources of information which aim to facilitate procedures or provide support with their daily practice... This pocketbook is undoubtedly an outstanding tool for everyone and we recommend it to all urologists, regardless of their level of practice. European Urology Today The Oxford Medical Handbooks have always impressed me for how accessible and easy to understand they are, whilst also having an impressive amount of detail. This very much applies to this third edition of the Oxford Handbook of Urology. Firstly the book has an excellent layout with common and important topics broken down into sensible headings. It is very easy to find what you need within the book and there is an appropriate distribution of detail with common topics being thoroughly explained... The core topics are covered with surprising detail for a handbook. On top of this there is coverage of topics relevant for the practice of urology such as basic renal physiology and how to communicate effectively with patients, making a very rounded and complete handbook for this field, Urology News, August 2013

Good Brother, Bad Brother: The Story of Edwin Booth and John Wilkes Booth, by James Cross Giblin

Edwin Booth and his younger brother John Wilkes Booth were, in many ways, two of a kind. They were among America’s finest actors, having inherited their father’s commanding stage presence along with his penchant for alcohol and impulsive behavior. In other respects, the two brothers were very different. Edwin was more introspective, while John was known for his passionate intensity. They stood at opposite poles politically, as well: Edwin voted for Abraham Lincoln; John was an ardent advocate of the Confederacy.

Award-winning author James Cross Giblin draws on first-hand accounts of family members, friends, and colleagues to create vivid images of Edwin Booth and his brother John Wilkes, best known today as the man who shot Abraham Lincoln. He traces the events leading up to the assassination and describes the effects of John Wilkes’s infamous deed on himself, his family, and his country. Comprehensive and compelling, this dual portrait illuminates a dark and tragic moment in the nation’s history and explores the complex legacy of two leading men—one revered, the other abhorred. From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 6-9–Actors Edwin and John Wilkes Booth each had a compelling stage presence and a fondness for alcohol, just like their famous father, Junius. Edwin spent his life perfecting his craft and building a reputation as the finest classical actor of his time. John was impulsive, popular with the ladies, and best known today as the man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. The text is carefully researched, drawing heavily on firsthand accounts from family members and liberally illustrated with photographs, most from the Harvard Theatre Collection, Houghton Library. The writing is engaging and eminently readable, and presents history in a manner that is, in essence, consummate storytelling. Giblin traces the events leading up to the assassination, discussing the Civil War, John Wilkes Booth's love for the Confederacy, and the plots he and his colleagues hatched to kidnap Lincoln. The effects that the assassination had on the country, and his family, are clearly presented. The search for Booth and his coconspirators rivals the excitement of police procedurals as Giblin chronicles efforts by law enforcement to bring the group to justice. Edwin's later life and his contributions to American theater are discussed. Behind all his successes, however, stood the ghost of his brother John, and the act that would forever link the Booth name with disgrace. What a story! This is nonfiction at its finest.–Jennifer Ralston, Harford County Public Library, Belcamp, MD

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 5-8. Giblin never forgets the "story" part of history. In this absorbing narrative, he frames the intertwined tale of two brothers with accounts of their families, friends, the Civil War, and ninteenth-century theater. Edwin and John Wilkes were sons of Junius Booth, also a famed actor, and Edwin learned his craft in part as a young teen, traveling with his touring father to keep him from drinking too much. Alcoholism and depression afflicted the family, but Giblin is brilliant at showing that darkness was only one part of a life. Edwin's support of the North and John Wilkes' passion for the Southern cause drove a wedge in the family, and John Wilkes' assassination of Lincoln--plotted out for readers from historical documents with breathtaking clarity--haunted Edwin and his family. With settings that range from Australia to Germany, from New York to San Francisco, each vividly reconstructed, Giblin's book will engross readers until the very last footnote. GraceAnne DeCandido

Seemingly a young adult book, but is MUCH better!
By Ralph DeMattia
I picked this book up in my local library, preparing to be bored by it's being a Young Adult book, but after reading the first chapter, I was so impressed that I went over to one of the library's computers and ordered it from Amazon. That was in 2005, and I read it at least twice a year. It is G O O D ! VERY good! It is intensly informative without the superfluous adjectives and repetative words that seem to permeate so many adult books, leading to to have formed the opinion LONG ago that authors get paid more the longer a book is.
This book is one of the BEST I have ever read on the lincoln assassination; it is informative and interesting and extremely well written. It would make a great FIRST book on the assassination, or the last. If you'd like a book that gets right to the point, doesn't preach; yet tells the story without unneccessary fluff, this one is it for you! IT'S GREAT!!!!

The "other" Booth brother
By Jack E. Levic
We all know the story of John Wilkes Booth and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. GOOD BROTHER BAD BROTHER takes to a different part of the story. What was it like to be a close relative of John Wilkes Booth? The book concentrates on the amazing life of Edwin Booth. John and Edwin were the sons of a famous stage actor and the two men and another brother also became stage actors. John Wilkes was a favorite because of his extreme good looks but Edwin had the stage presence needed to maintain a career.
Here is a tragic story that affected so many people on so many levels. Just being a "Booth" family member was dangerous after the assassination. What was to become of the family?
GOOD BROTHER BAD BROTHER gives us insight into Edwin's life and how his world changed forver.
Although the book is informative, it seems we could have had more information on Edwin and the Booth Family. The exceptional part of the book is the mountain of historical pictures contained. The pictures are a fascinating step back in time.
GOOD BROTHER BAD BROTHER is informative, if somewhat uninspired in prose, and is worth a read for anything fascinated with this amazing period in history.

Great writing and a story anyone interested in the politics ...

Was required reading for my son's 8th grade history class, but I found it fascinating as well. Great writing and a story anyone interested in the politics of the civil war and even current political divisions among families might find fascinating.

Excellent Overview for Students of Family Life
By Dr. David Frisbie
This 14th edition of a classic text in family studies provides an excellent look at family styles in the early 21st century. Although the bulk of the book is North American in content and origin, there is useful material here from other cultural perspectives.

Especially helpful is the section on parenting (section 7) which includes a careful study of current trends in adoption. Within the U.S., individual states are changing public policy in ways that benefit families who include non-birth children within their household. Recent U.S. federal policy also encourages this process.

Another useful section reviews "work and family life." (section 9) Here is one of the best sociological studies of the way our current economy impacts family roles, structures, and outcomes. More study is needed here; this is a topic well worth exploring.

Overall, the 14th edition continues to build on an excellent platform that Jerome and Arlene Skolnick have provided and edited.

Good but a difficult read
By F. Lena
This book has a collaboration of authors and the writing style varies greatly from one chapter to the next. Some are very difficult to read and can turn an interesting topic into a snooze fest.

Overall it is a very good book that looks at different points of view (i.e., conservative, liberal, feminist). I couldn't rate it that high though because it was difficult to read.

Need to examine books before sending.
By Kimberly A Cornelison
[[VIDEOID:c81240842eb3195c27e2aa2ba3bea109]] When my daughter received her book for her college class, she sent me a video of the book with disgust on how the books pages were damaged and stuck inside the binding and some were pages were stuck together. Not very happy especially with quality the price that was paid for it.

The Forces of Nature, by P. C. W. Davies

This is a new edition of Paul Davies' very highly regarded text on high-energy particle physics aimed at the scientifically educated general reader. Since the appearance of the first edition in 1979 there have been many major developments in the field, and the author has taken this opportunity to bring the text completely up to date. Paul Davies includes details of one of the most significant of these developments, the experimental discovery in 1983 of the W and Z intermediate vector bosons, and discusses the implications for the eventual unification of the four forces of nature. In addition to this, the discovery of the top and bottom quarks, the details and predictions of modern grand unified theories (GUTs), and the application of the results of high-energy physics to studies of the very early universe are all included.

Excellent and challenging book for a non-scientist!
By A Customer
I am a non-scientist and, while I have no illusions that reading this book had turned me into a physicist, I do feel that I have gained a solid exposure to physics by reading this book.
There's a lot of material covered in this book, and some passages are difficult. But it is extremely well-written, impeccably organized, explains things very clearly, and once you master even the hardest sections, you feel very rewarded and enlightened. It's too bad this book is out of print!
I will keep my copy for years to come as a reference point as I continue to read about physics!

Good source of intuition
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
For someone interested in the fundamental physics of the different interactions in nature, but has yet learned the necessary mathematics needed to obtain a complete understanding of it, this book could be a good start. I read it when it first appeared in 1979, and it was a good source of intuition then as it is now. I had just finished taking BS degree in mathematics, and was very interested in becoming more familiar with the quantum field theories of elementary particle physics. A few years later in 1983, while waiting for a class on quantum field theory, the instructor, Ervin Fenyves, arrived to class and with great excitement announced the discovery of the intermediate vector bosons by the CERN team in Geneva. The syllabus for the class was of course not followed that day, but instead Dr. Fenyves explained just what decay signatures indicated the presence of the vector bosons.
It must be remembered that this book was published before the discoveries of the intermediate vector bosons, and therefore it is in this sense out of date. These discoveries, and others after them, such as the discovery of flavor-changing neutrinos, give solid support to current physical theories of the fundamental interactions which the author introduces in this book. Readers needing a more in-depth understanding of fundamental physics will need to learn a lot more physics and mathematics then what can be found in this book. This will take a lot of time and effort, but it is well worth it, since the picture of reality that physics now gives us is fascinating, and guarantees to be even more so in the decade ahead, as experiments are conducted at even higher energies. There are of course many excellent books that are more up-to-date, and readers should consult these as their main source of information, but this one could still be used as an historical introduction and overview of what was known before the intermediate vector boson era.

A Must Read...
By A Customer
If you are a highschool student or a college freshman/sophmore with an interest in physics, want to know about current topics in physics, and have only the time and money to spend on just one book, spend it on this one. It goes very far!!! If fact, most far than any popular exposition that don't use any math.
It explains very detailed concpts of gravity, electromagnetic, and the weak and strong forces, and symmetry. It talks about the work being done on their unification. And ends with a conculsion by the author on what are the major open questions and what current physics is and what it ought to be.
Oh, there is not much in this book on superstring theory, since this develpment is quite recent.

Seems honest, well researched, nuanced
By Edward U.
People tend to assume that all religions are basically the same. If you stop and think though, it often seems rather that different cults exist at different points along a spectrum extending from very benign, to very destructive, with countless points in between. Therefore, although people rarely want to think about the distinct 'textures' of distinct religions, it can be important to do so, especially in the case of a religion that until recently had little presence in the West and is now growing rapidly through conversions, immigration, and reproduction. Such is the case with Islam. Bernard Lewis, the famous scholar of Islamic history, has said that Europe will be Islamic by the end of the century. And Islam is growing rapidly in the U.S. too.

Since human rights organizations report that some 51 of the world's 53 Muslim-majority countries are currently NOT democracies that protect freedom of the press and other civil rights Westerners take for granted, it seems necessary to ask:

1. Will Islam, as it grows in the West, tend to chill or threaten civil liberties increasingly?

2. And if in some decades, a Muslim-majority should arise in a Western country, what is the likelihood that freedom and democracy will be replaced by Sharia?

3. Exactly how resistant to democracy is Islam in its core beliefs and examples?

4. Is the lack of democracy in Muslim-majority countries primarily a result of temporary historical factors having little to do with Islam?

5. Since mere debate of the previous questions is highly unlikely to lead to a consensus among experts, should not Western countries subscribe to the following prudent, pragmatic principle?: "Until at least a majority of Muslim-majority states become pluralist democracies, the West should limit Muslim immigration to make sure that Muslims have no future prospect of becoming a majority in a Western country."

Whether you agree with the above principle or not (and I don't know if Spencer does), anyone who cares about personal and social freedoms, and sees the current state of Islamic politics, can use Spencer's book to make progress in thinking about the nature of Islam. Some experts are more optimistic about Islam than he is (Karen Armstrong, Michael Novak) and any decent person will try to learn about all sides in order to avoid unbalanced or extreme views. But whether or not Spencer turns out in the long run to have been more right than wrong, his books are intelligent, nuanced, extremely well-researched and certainly worthy of inclusion in any honest study of Islam.

Qur'an not divinely inspired
By John Hauck
Excellent book, among several on this subject. It exposes the Qur'an as being inaccurate in much of its historical recitation of the Christian faith, demeaning if not heretical of Jesus as not being the Son of God, and vehement (if not warlike) in its proclamations that nonbelievers not only are going to Hell, but should be killed by all Islamic believers. Thus it is difficult to understand why even "peaceful and moderate" Moslems base their faith on such a supposed "divine revelation" as the Qur'an. On the other hand, it is easy to see why Jihadists base their faith on the Qur'an. It is unfortunate that an entire religion, once understood, can be so suspect in its authenticity and in its supposedly being the word of God. This book - and others on the same subject - are eye-opening on the subject.
Christians as well as Moslems need to read this book. And then, unlike some of my friends who advise me to "be tolerant" of others' religions, one might rise up in anger and resentment at what is the true evil in the world nowadays.

Lemon Tree, by Sandy Tolan

In 1967, not long after the Six Day War, three young Arabs ventured into the town of Ramla, in Jewish Israel. They were on a pilgrimage to see their separate childhood homes, from which their families had been driven out nearly twenty years before during the Israeli war for independence. Only one was welcomed: Bashir Al-Khayri was greeted at the door by a young woman named Dalia.

This act of kindness in the face of years of animosity and warfare is the starting point for a remarkable true story of two families, one Arab, one Jewish; an unlikely friendship that encompasses the entire modern history of Israelis and Palestinians and that holds in its framework a hope for true peace and reconciliation for the region.

From Publishers Weekly
Tolan offers listeners an easy-to-follow journey through a maddeningly stubborn conflict that has infused global politics since the 1940s. Based on his 1998 NPR documentary, Tolan personalizes the Arab-Israeli conflict by tracing the intertwined lives of a Palestinian refugee named Bashir Al-Khairi and a Jewish settler named Dalia Eshkenazi Landau. The pair is connected through a stone home in Ramla, now part of Israel. Built in the 1930s by Bashir's father, the Al-Khairi family was forced to flee during the violent formation of Israel in 1948. The Eshkenazis, Holocaust survivors from Bulgaria, became the new owners. After 1967's Six Day War, Bashir showed up and Dalia invited him in and began an intense dialogue that's lasted four decades. Tolan's evenhanded narration imparts the passion of both sides without slipping into impassioned delivery. While at times his random emphasis of words makes for a slightly wavy cadence, his pronunciation of Arab and Jewish names and phrases is pleasingly authentic. One of Tolan's most moving passages chronicles Dalia 20-mile trip to Ramallah to visit Bashir. Their seemingly simple conversation, rendered with just the right amount of heart, crystallizes and humanizes the positions of each side. The Lemon Tree is a clear-eyed and steady ride into deeply felt and ever-volatile territory. Simultaneous release with the Bloomsbury hardcover (Reviews, Mar. 27).

From Booklist
*Starred Review* To see in human scale the tragic collision of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, Tolan focuses on one small stone house in Ramla--once an Arab community but now Jewish. Built in 1936 by an Arab family but acquired by a Jewish family after the Israelis captured the city in 1948, this simple stone house has anchored for decades the hopes of both its displaced former owners and its new Jewish occupants. With remarkable sensitivity to both families' grievances, Tolan chronicles the unlikely chain of events that in 1967 brought a long-dispossessed Palestinian son to the threshold of his former home, where he unexpectedly finds himself being welcomed by the daughter of Bulgarian Jewish immigrants. Though that visit exposes bitterly opposed interpretations of the past, it opens a real--albeit painful--dialogue about possibilities for the future. As he establishes the context for that dialogue, Tolan frankly details the interethnic hostilities that have scarred both families. Yet he also allows readers to see the courage of families sincerely trying to understand their enemy. Only such courage has made possible the surprising conversion of the contested stone house into a kindergarten for Arab children and a center for Jewish-Arab coexistence. What has been achieved in one small stone building remains fragile in a land where peacemaking looks increasingly futile. But Tolan opens the prospect of a new beginning in a concluding account of how Jewish and Arab children have together planted seeds salvaged from one desiccated lemon tree planted long ago behind one stone house. A much-needed antidote to the cynicism of realpolitik. Bryce Christensen

Review

“[An] extraordinary book…A sweeping history of the Palestinian-Israeli conundrum…Tolan's narrative provides a much-needed, human dimension to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But he also skillfully weaves into this tale a great deal of history, all properly sourced. Despite the complex and controversial nature of the story, this veteran journalist has produced a highly readable and evocative history.” ―Washington Post

“The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East is the story of two people trying to get beyond denial, and closer to a truth they can both live with. By its end, Bashir Khairi and Dalia Eshkenazi are still arguing, talking -- and mostly disagreeing. But their natures--intellectual, questing, passionate and committed--may represent the best hope of resolving one of the most intractable disputes in human history…It is very tempting to write off the Israeli-Palestinian standoff as insoluble. But one lesson of The Lemon Tree is the relatively short span of its history. The conflict between the two peoples is little more than a century old.” ―Seattle Times

“No novel could be more compelling...This book… will haunt you long after you put it down. And it will certainly be one of the best works of nonfiction that you will read this year.” ―Christian Science Monitor

“A graceful, compassionate and unmuddied presentation of Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lives of an Arab and a Jew, strangers who forge a connection and a reconciliation while never veering from their passionate desires for a homeland.” ―Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“Quite simply the most important book I've read for ages...a handbook to understanding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a narrative that captures its essence through tracing the connected lives of two extraordinary individuals. Literally the single work I'd recommend to anyone seeking to understand why the conflict remains unresolved, and why it continues to dominate the region.” ―Time

“Beautifully told…a very poignant but impressively unsentimental story…It reads like a work of fiction.” ―Nation

“Sandy Tolan has found a remarkable story, and has told it in all its beauty and sadness.” ―Adam Hochschild, author of Bury the Chains and King Leopold's Ghost

“Truly remarkable.” ―Tom Segev, author of One Palestine, Complete and 1949: The First Israelis

"The Lemon Tree"
By David Klenk
Sandy Tolan's "The Lemon Tree" was a thought provoking novel detailing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Tolan presented information from various points of views, creating an unbiased account of the conflict that allowed the reader to form their own opinions based on facts. This book was filled with historical accounts that revealed the background of the conflict and set the stage for the humanizing aspect weaved throughout the book. Tolan tells the emotional story of Dalia Eshkenazi and Bashir Khairi, and their struggle over the right to a home that has been unwillingly transferred from one to another. Their daily struggle over a home is symbolic of the moral struggle over a land that has been occupied by two different people groups who are unwilling to relinquish control. This personal account brings an emotional and personal angle to the often over-told and over-generalized struggle that many people have simply become accustomed to hearing about. It instills a sense of urgency in readers concerning the resolution of the topic, as it shows the daily struggle that the citizens of modern day Israel are experiencing. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone looking to understand more about the background of modern day Israel, the conflicts surrounding it, or the emotions that are so deeply ingrained in their cultures.

A powerful story, a real tour de force!
By W. F. HALLAM
In a conflict like the Israeli-Palestinian one, the truth seems to always be elusive. It is more often than not a question of perspectives and beliefs. And beliefs are only stories that we keep hearing repeated again and again and which are being reinforced and strengthened because we tend to only see that which we already believe to begin with.
Most Americans only know the Israeli side propagated by the powerful Israeli lobby that dominates US politics and so it is refreshing to come across a book that tells a different tale, or rather tales of both sides. It is only by putting ourselves in others' shoes that we can truly appreciate their suffering. Tolani does just that. His enormous compassion and talent as a historian and researcher serve him well in depicting the human dimension behind the conflict though I resisted feeling more hopeless than ever by the time I finished his book. The increasing tensions in the region and the mounting inflexibility of the current Israeli government combined with the impotence of the Palestinian Authority leaves no possibility for a viable two state solution. Ultimately, I believe the Palestinians and Israelis will be living in one secular democratic state. After all, basing a nation's identity on its religion - be it Islam, Judaism or Christianity - stands against the progressive ideals of diversity, inclusion and freedom.

MUST READ AND SHARE
By Rheva Darling
This book has been circulating at our gym, and thank goodness it found me. I just loved it and will be reading it again. All of the history in the story was familiar to me: names, places, events. But the book put everything together in an informative and compassionate voice. It takes me to a place that allows me to understand better the current status of the situation of the Israeli and Palestinian people. I will be sharing the book with my church group and book club. My hope is that new readers will not only have their eyes opened but their hearts as well.

Napoleon, by Alan Forrest

On a cold December day in 1840 Parisians turned out in force to watch as the body of Napoleon was solemnly carried on a riverboat from Courbevoie on its final journey to the Invalides. In this book Alan Forrest tells the remarkable story of how the son of a Corsican attorney became the most powerful man in Europe: a man whose charisma and legacy have endured since his lonely death on the Island of St Helena. Forrest cuts away the many layers of myth that have grown up around Napoleon, a man who mixed history and legend promiscuously. Drawing on original research and his own distinguished background in French history, Forrest undercuts the 'Great Man' theory of history to demonstrate that Napoleon was as much a product of his times as he was their creator.
