Previously I was very doubtful about the period of delivery after purchasing. Surprisingly, by 24th June 2010 the parcel containing the book arrived here (in Botswana), far much earlier than the given 2nd July 2010 as the expected or estimated ultimate delivery date.

Born in California, Gerard De Groot is Professor of Modern History at the University of St Andrews. He has written twelve books and dozens of articles on various aspects of 20th Century History. His book on the atom bomb (The Atom Bomb: A Life) was published to considerable acclaim and won the prestigious RUSI Westminster Medal for Military Literature. His iconoclastic history of 1960s, The Sixties Unplugged, won the Ray and Pat Browne Prize for the best single authored book on cultural history. De Groot contributes to national newspapers both in Britain and in the USA, and he has been a regular columnist for Scotland on Sunday amongst others.

I must admit, I have always liked Ronald Reagan. While I didn’t always agree with the man, I always believed that he was acting from a few simple, core values. In addition, while frequently described as being a rightist, I think Reagan was more pragmatic than that. I don’t know whether you call him a populist, wishy-washy, or just being in touch, but Reagan always seemed to be where his constituents would be in a couple years. Gerard DeGroot takes a shot at explaining the Reagan phenomenon.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* Although his own political views occasionally come out, for the most part, DeGroot is a reasonably impartial observer. He is honest about assessing Reagan’s skills, shortcomings, and how he was packaged and managed by his handlers. Indeed, at times more of the book seems to be about the handlers than about Reagan.

* DeGroot’s analysis reveals some surprising trends. While Reagan is often assumed to be the candidate of big business, his gubernatorial campaigns were mostly financed by small contributors. In many ways, Reagan’s use of media, grass roots organizations, large armies of volunteers and a large following of small contributors resembles the campaign of Barrack Obama. The technology was different, but the organization was very similar.

* The author also captures Reagan’s ability to appeal to the common man. Half the fun of the book is watching the conflict between the amateur Reagan and the professional PR and political consultants over how best to present the candidate. While Reagan did take direction and relied on professional advice, he also had a habit of doing things his own way…and being proven correct. It must have driven the professionals nuts.

* The book is well referenced and has a complete bibliography so most of DeGroot’s facts can be traced to an original source. And while I don’t always agree with his analysis, it is well reasoned and consistent with the facts.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* At times the book can get a little dry and repetitive. The section on Reagan, Pat Brown and the unrest at the University of California seemed to drag on for page after page when the point was obvious rather quickly. In addition, a fair amount of text was devoted to the claims and counterclaims from Reagan’s consultants over who was most responsible for his success. It got old after a while.

* The book’s scope is only the California gubernatorial campaign, and does not touch on Reagan’s later presidential campaigns. I appreciate the author’s intent to only discuss the earlier campaign, but I was left wanting more.

=== Summary ===

* I found the book to be fascinating, although it occasionally got a bit carried away with details. It was a great look at how Reagan went from being an babe-in-the-woods about political campaigns to one of the great masters. Granted, Reagan had some innate talents, but he was also a quick study and learn his lessons well.

Any political fan, regardless of your own viewpoints, would probably enjoy the book. The story is interesting in itself, and it is amazing how many of Obama’s “revolutionary” techniques were pioneered by Reagan.

Solid Research, Defeated

I once wrote "Great biography can only issue from two people: the clear-headed honesty of the admirer (Edmund Morris' Theodore Roosevelt biography trilogy is a great example of this), or from the unclouded hatred of a detractor (any Hitler biography worth the paper it is written on)."

DeGroot has given me reason to revise, however. "Great biography can only come from two pens: the clear-headed honesty of the admirer, or from the reasonable hatred of a detractor."

DeGroot is certainly an unclouded detractor--but he is also an unreasonable one.

His research is solid. The quotes selected, from Reagan and his associates, are illuminating. Thankfully, the quotes often fill the majority of each page. "Thankfully," because: DeGroot's analysis is not worth the paper and ink. He often summarizes what he had quoted in the previous sentence, leaving it there. When he doesn't simply summarize, however...

School-yard insults rule. Reagan may not have been the best actor, but we hardly need reminded he was "mediocre" every time his acting days are mentioned. Whenever Reagan's intelligence arises, DeGroot finds some quote dismissing any potential intellect, as though the mere fact his statement is a quote is enough of a wall to hide DeGroot's opinion. These are standard enough insults. Lazy biographers aim them at any subject. Any lesser biography of any man or woman are filled with snide remarks.

But then DeGroot does one better. He mocks Reagan's Alzheimer's. "Reagan would later be famous for what he forgot" (12). Come now, DeGroot. Surely you could hold back your dislike for the man enough to keep from insulting the man for a disease he could not control?

Add to this fuzzy, unclear definitions for "conservative" that change depending on the point or insult DeGroot wants to make, and you have a mess where any good faith commentary he strives to make ends up being a non-starter. When DeGroot writes the word "conservative" does he mean: A) "someone opposed to change," B) "someone who puts the common people first," C) "someone who puts the elite first," D) "someone against social progress," E) "someone for social progress," or F) "someone knowingly or unknowingly supporting big business over big government"? DeGroot tries to clarify terms on p. 13-15, but muddies the waters thoroughly. Any time he uses the word "conservative" through the rest of the book, it's an open question which concept he's referring to.

In the end--DeGroot's research is solid enough and covers a relatively unexplored area of Ronald Reagan's life.

But his commentary is crass, and his analysis weak. Wait for a better scholar to cover the gubernatorial election.

Ed Sherman is a well-known boating writer and educator, and the author of two International Marine books: Outboard Engines (1997) and Powerboater's Guide to Electrical Systems (2000). He is the assistant director of education at the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), the country's preeminent standard-making body, where he designs and teaches teacher-training programs in marine technology fields, including marine electrical systems. Prior to that, he taught marine electronics for many years at the New England Institute of Technology, in Warwick, RI, where he was chairman of the marine technology department. Great info for 99% of outboard owners

I'm not quite sure what the reviewer from Raleigh, N.C. expected from this book. It is clearly not written with the intent of teaching you how to tear down and rebuild outboard motors. The editor's review above clearly says that. But If you are looking for a good common sense all-round outboard motor troubleshooting guide, then this book, combined with the specific shop manual for your motor, some moderately cheap test equipment (which you may have a lot of already) and anyone with a descent mechanical aptitude will probably be able to fix 90% of all the problems they will ever encounter with an outboard motor. The other 10% I personally will leave to the pros. It will also teach you how to avoid a lot of problems in the first place which is the biggest savings when your talking outboards. I am just a hobbyist, not a mechanic and this book has already helped me get two old motors back up and running and has been well worth its price to me. The book is well organized and is easy to understand. The author keeps things simple and down to earth and isn't trying to impress anyone with a bunch of techno-jargon. Sure the text could have been larger, maybe the pictures a little better, but hey what's perfect for everyone?

This is an excellent source of information. If you are a "first-time boat buyer" and are meticulous about the "health" of your boat, search no more! This is THE guide to use. This book is so filled with useful information that I've summarized parts of the book to create a maintenance guide for my boat. If you're not the type that likes to get your hands dirty, at least this book will give you the information to have an "intelligent" conversation with your mechanic!

Whenever Dahlia Rose has a new release out, I rush to get it but take my time to read it because I never want the book to end.
I absolutely LOVED Stalemate. LOVED the characters. Isa was just awesome and Tawny is the best friend/ sister any woman could ask for.
Bryce seriously got on my nerves at the beginning but he so redeemed himself that I had to forgive him. Lol!!

Crossing my fingers that Tawny will get her story.

Forty years ago, prospects were bleak for a patient with cystic fibrosis, which was then an invariably fatal disease of early childhood. Patients seldom survived beyond infancy; they succumbed to malnutrition and pulmonary complications. Nonetheless, a few centers initiated an aggressive, comprehensive approach to the care of patients with cystic fibrosis that introduced symptomatic treatments designed to slow the progression of the disease. Since that time, their clinical condition has improved. Although some patients still die early in life, many others live well into adulthood. Better diagnostic techniques and refinements of therapeutic strategies have combined to increase the median age of survival beyond 30 years. More than a third of all patients in the United States who are registered with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation are older than 18 years of age. Cystic fibrosis has "grown up" and become a disease treated by internists as well as pediatricians.

Cystic Fibrosis in Adults discusses the advances and reviews extensively the clinical issues that are pertinent to patients with this disease. The first several chapters serve as an introduction and review the pathogenic mechanisms that may be potential targets of therapy. Along with improvements in the clinical care of patients with cystic fibrosis, our understanding of the molecular and cellular biology of the disease has expanded rapidly since the identification of the gene for cystic fibrosis 10 years ago. Whereas previous therapies were directed at the downstream effects of the disease, new therapies are being designed to correct or bypass the basic defect.

Because more than 90 percent of patients with cystic fibrosis die from associated lung disease, much of the book is devoted to the pulmonary manifestations of cystic fibrosis. Several chapters discuss the current management of sinopulmonary disease in cystic fibrosis, which is directed primarily at the consequences of infection and inflammation, as well as the role of lung transplantation in end-stage disease. New approaches to treatment of pulmonary disease are also discussed, with a focus on the status of gene therapy for cystic fibrosis. Although this information may be useful to researchers, many of the details included in the discussion are probably irrelevant to clinicians. Less space is devoted to some of the newer, exciting pharmacologic therapies that may correct or circumvent the defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. Many of these new drugs are now being used in patients, and I suspect that they would be of great interest to clinicians who care for adults with this disease. Indeed, these therapeutic strategies may deserve a chapter of their own.

The remainder of Cystic Fibrosis in Adults covers many of the extrapulmonary manifestations, with particular emphasis on the pancreatic and gastrointestinal complications of the disease. It also includes chapters on clinical topics that are neglected in other textbooks, such as reproductive issues in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Cystic Fibrosis in Adults clearly shows the symbiosis between research and clinical care with regard to the disease. The book is well organized, and the individual topics are covered thoroughly. Inevitably, as in any multiauthored book, there is some duplication of the information presented. Nevertheless, the editors have produced a useful reference book, and this comprehensive textbook integrates information on the care of patients with new insight into the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis. As our understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of the disease advances, new therapeutic strategies will emerge that ideally will increase the life expectancy of patients even further. With luck, future editions will need to include a section on the geriatric care of patients with cystic fibrosis.

This is an incredible book that can assist any adult CF patient. The authors work in North Carolina at UNC and have an excellent grasp of the problems the disease has on parients and more importantly, they understand the progression in adults.

For someone looking to understand the reasons for the tests, and what the goals are in treating adult CF patients, this is the book to get.

Esta novela es dificil de resenar. Me pregunte por que se desarrolla en 1995 y entendi que la protagonista es tan inocente e ing�nue que no podia ser del tiempo actual. La historia es coherente, con dialogos entendibles y la escritora utiliza la epoca para transportarnos a la ella con las modas y las situaciones. Ahora, la historia de Julia es dificil de creer, es tan ingenua que es incredible donde cae y lo que le ocurre. El lector se queda con interrogantes de sus personajes, areas oscuras que no sabemos los porque y al final algunas situaciones que se cierran con una llamada de telefono. La novela es de alto contenido erotico pero tiene romance.

Rachel Grant is the owner and founder of Rachel Grant Coaching and is a Sexual Abuse Recovery Coach. She is also the author of Beyond Surviving: The Final Stage in Recovery from Sexual Abuse. Rachel brings to the table a passionate belief that her clients do not have to remain trapped or confronted daily by the thoughts or behaviors that result from abuse. Through her own journey of recovery from sexual abuse, she has also gained insight and understanding about what it takes to overcome abuse. This makes it possible for her to relate to and appreciate her clients' struggles intimately. Based on her desire to foster community, intimacy, and connection, Rachel has dedicated much of her time to understanding relationships and communication. A simple synopsis of Myers-Briggs

I (and my daughter) really enjoyed this. I'm presently reading "Gifts Differing" to get a more detailed explanation, but this short book was kind of like a preview to get me started.
One of the things I really like, since I'm an INFP and my husband is an ESTJ (opposites!) is that there's a section at the end of each of the 4 descriptions that tells you things to remember when you're dealing with the other-like how a J interacts with a P and so forth. It also mentions pitfalls and traps to be aware of.
It's a short and easy read to get you started, and so now, for me, the detailed books are more readily understood.

I'd give this zero stars if I could. It's awful even as an over view, slimmer than some children's books I've seen packaged as a "Fast food toy". Even knowing some of the basic information this is worthless as any sort of real guide or tool. There's barely enough information to fill a college lecture or power point. Removing this such as the author biography and the table of contents that ended up numbered, there's only about 24 pages of "writing" and that at an extremely large font, with huge margins.

There's no information on individual types. Instead there's a focus on "thinkers" vs "feelers", "judgers" vs "percievers", etc. And even in this the information can be scanned in less than 30 seconds and seems oversimplified. I've seen more informative internet pages.

Seriously, even if you're looking for something short and simple don't bother with this. I paid $4, and it was still too much.
