not what you would expect

The "veves and sigils" she is referring to are actually designs that she created herself. I thought I was ordering a book about the uses of historical veves. The book is very short, and each "veve" has one page long description. This book went right in the trash.

WTH Is "American Voodou"?

Do not get confused. This book is not about veves used in the real religion of Haitian Voodou. The drawings in the book arise from the imagination of the author who claims she practices, "American Voodou" (no such thing).

Manifesting Magick with Veves and Symbols is one of those unique books where, when you're reading, you feel as if the book falls away and you're having a conversation with the author. Inside you'll find practical information that is clearly presented and easy to follow and use. Veves and sigils are new to me, but Claudia Williams honest and encouraging text made it easy and comfortable for me to incorporate them into my practices. I know this is a work-book that I'll turn to again and again.

While feminism may have changed boardrooms, it didn't make much headway in bedrooms, argues philosopher/writer hooks. Women have made progress in regard to social empowerment, but the quest for emotional density for love has remained elusive. Why are men still so emotionally unsatisfying? Because, hooks argues, "patriarchal thinking has socialized males to believe that their manhood is affirmed when they are emotionally withholding." Patriarchy valorizes power and assigns it to men, and devalues nurturing and labels it feminine. Thus, young postfeminist women find themselves with "nothing to show" from their newly won equality but a double shift of work: first the paid job, then the physical and emotional homework of their relationship with their man. Still, as feminists of hooks's generation reach midlife, they may find it easier to rethink these terms of engagement, to risk changing things. The first step, she says, is self-love accepting one's body and soul just the way it is. Without such acceptance, women cannot escape the domination-submission dynamic. Even then, in this patriarchal universe finding love with another person may require some creativity. Hooks explores romantic friendships, lesbian loves and "circles of love" (which allow for committed bonds that extend beyond one partnership). A life with no coupling, but "a more authentic relationship between self and world," may also be satisfying. Twenty-something women who've embraced the highly problematic "bitch persona" Elizabeth Wurtzel has written of may sneer at hooks's affirming style, but older women, particularly those raising girls themselves, will find much to ponder here. Digging deeply into the snarl of sexist habits of thought and being, hooks concludes that women can have true love and autonomy in their lives only if, starting with mothers and daughters, they genuinely support each other in confronting misogyny in all its insidious forms. wise, humane, and well worth reading.

I have read journal articles by bell hooks, but this is the first book I have read of hers. It won't be my last book by her.
Communion: The Female Search for Love is part memoir, part challenge, and very thoughtprovoking.
One aspect I liked best was her debunking of the myth of "women who love too much." Another center of focus is the effect of gainful employment on the perceptions of love.
Her language is direct and clear, but not simplistic.
This is a very good book, and one that I hope will be widely read and discussed.
Even though her subtitle is "The Female Search for Love," men can learn from this worthwhile book, if they have the courage to read it.
This might be an excellent choice for a book group.

Love from a feminist perspective

Communion is a discussion and legitimization of the pursuit of love from a mid-life feminist perspective. Hooks believes that the desire to understand how love works is a serious, important, and ultimately joyful life-work activity that should be studied and taught. The big question she attempts to answer is how to "find, keep, and make love despite the power of patriarchy."
The best part of this book is that Hooks always tells the truth as she sees it. There is no glossing over or contriving to make a point. Sometimes her language is sexually explicit and blunt. She explains love from the perspective of her own personal life experience and through intelligent observation and study of our culture and gender practices. The impact of the feminist movement is woven through her assessment. Unlike many other feminists, however, Hook's voice is not militant.
There is only one caution. The ever-present temptation for Hooks and for all of us is to find excuses why we cannot find love or be loving. From the ego's perspective, there is always a so-called justifiable reason for the rejection of another. In this case, the justifiable reason is patriarchy. However, unconditional love means that we undo the hate inour minds and extend love no matter what distressing disguise is presented to us.

not her best but still good

And for a reader who is not hip to feminist thought or lit, this is a good soft entry. I enjoyed bell hooks analogies and statements regarding that women do seek love in so many ways and her most important point was that many women do not receive non-sexual love from men, which is necessary for balance in life, thus forcing them to seek it in so many other ways.

This book encouraged me to read and understand other bell hooks books that are phenomenal. I respect hooks for offering a wide spectrum on emotions, and reality

About the Author
Richard A. Davis Jr is Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida. He has spent the past 40 years studying coasts throughout the world. He specializes in beach/inlet/barrier island morphodynamics and Holocene history of coasts. Dr Davis is the author/editor of twelve previous volumes, most of which are on coastal topics.

Duncan M. FitzGerald is an Associate Professor in the Earth Science Department at Boston University. During the past 25 years he has studied the morphodynamics and hydraulics of tidal inlets, the stratigraphy and evolution of barrier systems, and sediment transport in estuaries. This research has taken him to coasts throughout the world resulting in numerous professional publications.

This was a class requirement. The book is hardcover and the content well organized and well illustrated.
It is recommended if your class needs it. However, collegue level books must do something about their pricing.
Why is it that the most expensive books are designed for an audience that can barely pay for it?

Richard Davis Jr and Duncan Fitzgerald are great researchers of coastal environments. The book Beaches and Coasts is an excellent book, featuring various kinds of environments, their relations and coastal development. Well written and illustrated. Basic Library.

Great Memoir

A few weeks ago i read Acceptable Loss for the second time after first reading it several years ago. Over the last ten years ive read well over a 100 memoirs written by guys who served in WW2 and Vietnam and in my opinion this book ranks up there as one of the better ones. Its fast paced and interesting yet its not just a book of war stories, in comparison with my other fav vietnam memoirs like Chickenhawk, Ghosts and Shadows, Baptism, Killing Zone, Father Soldier Son and Hundred Miles it too delves a few layers deeper than your average memoir in describing the physical and psychological toll combat in an unpopular war has on a young man. After finsishing the book while down the jersey shore on vacation this past summer i made it a point to see for the first time the n.j. vietnam veterans memorial during my trip north on the garden state parkway and find the name of the ranger who was killed while on patrol with Kregg towards the begining of the book. .... As for the book i highly recommend it to military buffs and many others who may be thinking about reading a first person account of the war.

A reality check

Kregg Jorgenson should be recognized as one of the finest authors on the Vietnam war. Acceptable Loss is his first effort and set the tone for every subsequent work. If you want to know why "America's finest" served during this unpopular war, and why they gave their best, read Acceptable Loss and then pick up the rest of Jorgenson's works. You'll come away feeling patriotic and proud to be an American. Thanks, Kregg.

A great look at the effects of war on the average grunt .

Kregg Jorgenson takes you through his very personal and both physically and mentally painful account of his entire time in Vietnam. Although a decorated "hero", he shows us how he found something far more improtant than his medals or cause: his "buddies". He guides the reader through the numerous harrowing experiences that re-shaped his whole way of thinking and does not try to gloss over his own shortcomings. The one over-riding thing I can say about this book is that it is honest. There are no stats, no overall perspective, just the plain truth about what he witnessed and felt during his tour. That is the most shocking, honourable, moving and often funny thing he can write. An immensely enjoyable book, so much so I read it virtually everywhere I got a chance to sit down; gripping to the last.

Bradley and Furrow's EFT for Dummies is a hit

This was a book we've all been wanting for, for years! EFT can be a complicated therapy to comprehend, and here - at last - is a book that explains it all in very readable terms, for, . . . . . uh, dummies.

No - not dummies so much as those of us who have wanted to be able to understand the model and have a way of explaining it to others. This is a great read- for therapists as well as for all of those couples out there so desiring to have a better, closer, more bonded relationship.

Bradley and Furrow do a most excellent job weaving in stories of the couples they've counseled. Example after example bring it all home - it's easy to see yourself, or your friends, or clients on the pages as the chapters unfold.

This would be an excellent book for therapists interested in the EFT model, but not yet ready to commit to learning EFT. Also for motivated clients who want to understand more than just communication skills (that no one uses under distress). And for seasoned EFT therapists to share with clients so that they can understand what is really going on under the surface. It's not about the silly things that we all fight about - it's about the emotions underneath driving the crazy patterns we all find ourselves in, from time to time.

A Miracle of a Book for Couples

I've been a couple therapist for more than 30 years and have been learning and working
within the EFT model for 4 years. I've been giving books to couples for all of my practice
life. I have given or recommended this book to every couple in my practice.
The response has been consistently enthusiastic, and to hear ENTHUSIASM
from women and men about a self-help book is a rare thing. I really want to underscore
this: The couples are really using this book.

The tone of the book is extremely accessible. It's like a handy tool box to help couples relate
to their own and their partner's emotional life and to help them work together on their relationship.
Here are some of the things I've heard from those I've given this book,
"I can really see the impact I am having on my wife." "I can see how my husband
is hurting in a way I never considered." "The book helped me slow down and look
into my primary feeling. When I shared with my wife, there was no fight. She was
receptive. I think this book is really going to help us."

I think this is the perfect book for couples. I recommend it to EFT therapists, therapists
interested in this model, and especially to couples who are looking for a book that
can truly help them be more connected.

A great new book to help couples.

I've been counseling couples for many years and this book is one of the two best books for couples I have ever read. The authors have done an amazing job of elucidating the emotional work that can lead to a safe, secure and loving bond for a distressed couples relationship. I'm recommending this very practical book to all of my couples. It does a good job of clarifying the different roles partners get caught up in, resulting in an often destructive reactive cycle within the relationship. It then presents some well researched tools to help couples interrupt the reactive pattern they are caught in and restore peace and intimate connection to this most important relationship. The hope and strength Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy brings to the field of couples therapy and individual couples is truly transformative as well as personally exciting for me as a therapist and as a husband.

Fine analysis

Terrific book illuminates superior acting in film using various techniques. Naremore's choices are astute: he recognizes, for instance, Cary Grant's star turn in "North by Northwest" as the superb performance that it is; and I'll always be pleased that he wrote of Robert DeNiro as Rupert Pupkin in "King of Comedy" (rather than what at first seems the obvious choice -- his perfomance in "Raging Bull") for his study. The Pupkin role is certainly more clearly "about" performance, but it cheers me to see that underrated masterpiece lauded.
This is an academic book, but a very readable one. Naremore is an engaging and observant writer whose passion for the subject is evident. Fine stuff.

Another winner

Just thinking I can take a breather from Elizabeth von Arnim's delightful novels, which I have only recently discovered, when along comes another with beautiful period photographs. A novel of fresh and insightful ideas published 95 years ago and still remarkably readable.
