When Granny is hospitalized, Sammy works hard to make some robots to help her recover: "They guarded her. They marched for her. And they blasted her cough." When she returns home, Sammy's old robot arrives in the mail, "good as new." The bright pen-and-watercolor illustrations work magically to bring life to the charming robots and characters. Adorable endpapers filled with the lovingly created robots complete the book. Sammy is a winsome winner.

Affectionate, entertaining, and highly recommended

But who will help Gran when her cough sends her to the hospital? A Robot, of corse. Special, new, cough-blasting robots carefully made by a very concerned little grandson just for his Gran. Ian Whybrow's affectionate, entertaining, and highly recommended picturebook story is wonderfully showcased and enhanced with Adrian Reynolds' lively and colorful artwork.

Wonderful explanations

Wonderful explanations of the Buddha's lists. The author explained it extremely well. I love the use of plain english and putting the explanations in language anyone can understand. The author is a scholar and highly educated, but unlike other scholars who write books, this author wrote in plain language, easily understandable and digestable. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking the Buddha's wisdom or anyone who just wants a better understanding of the Buddha's teachings.

Dr. Snyder may know a lot about Buddhism, but he is no 'enlightened' soul. In the first few pages, I learned that he has given hundreds of lectures, published several books, and owns a 200-unit apartment building, which tells me that he may be a successful capitalist, but that's hardly the sort of stuff that makes me want him for my guru. I threw his book in the trash.

The author traces the emergence of these gangs in the four major geographical regions over the span of two centuries, from the early 1800s to 2012. Nationwide, street gangs now account for 1 in 6 homicides each year, and for 1 in 4 in very large cities. In recent years, the number of gangs, gang members, and gang homicides increased, even though the U.S. has seen a sharp drop in violent and property crimes over the past decade.

The author’s historical analysis reveals the key contributing factors to transformation of youth gangs, including social disorganization that occurred following large-scale immigration early in American history and urban policies that pushed minorities to inner city areas and public housing projects. This analysis includes the influence of prison gangs on street gangs. The first generation of prison gangs emerged spontaneously in response to dangers inside prisons. The second generation was for many years extensions of street gangs that grew enormously during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly in large urban areas in which public housing projects have served as incubators for street gangs. An insightful and engaging book

As one not very knowledgeable about gang activity and gang culture, I began Dr. Howell’s book with some trepidation as it had all the surface appearance of a long, boring, academic tome. I was quite wrong. The book provides fascinating insights into the history and evolution of street gangs in the United States covering almost two hundred years. Of particular interest is chapter three which vividly describes the emergence and transformation of gangs – illuminating why they form, how they grow, and their special appeal to disenfranchised urban youth. The book also dispels some myths about gangs and offers some promising approaches for combating their influence.
Overall, Dr. Howell does a truly remarkable job of synthesizing current gang research, theory, and data into a clear, comprehensive, and engaging book.

One of the best of its kind

If I could have just one recent book on my shelf to use as a reference for leadership development, organizational effectiveness, performance feedback and coaching, this would be the one. Each chapter is authoritatively written in clear, approachable language. Reflected in the chapters is a high level of professional and scientific discipline without a hint of academic arrogance. Unlike many edited books having different authors for each chapter, this book is well structured and integrated so as to be readable either from beginning-to-end (probably the best way) or each chapter standing alone. The chapter authors, each a recogonized expert, obviously paid attention to the others' writings. Each author provides a complementary piece of the puzzle while avoiding repetition. Worth the Time

A beautiful heartfelt romance

A DADDY FOR LUKE is a tender romantic story of two damaged souls connecting and finding their happily-ever after. Sandy and David are people you bond with easily even though they’ve faced (and continued to face) challenges most of us will never encounter. These two feel very “real.” I was quickly caught up in their story and backgrounds. The author does a great job keeping the reader guessing about David’s past, then resolving all plot threads neatly for a satisfying ending. This story would make a wonderful Hallmark movie!

Up Thoughts for Down Times is a classic by Les Brown "Feel Better" book!

I remember interviewing Les Brown on my show when this book came first came out in Hard Cover.

The book is designed to truly breakthrough any/all depression you may have experienced with job loss, divorce, severe illness, personal or public loss, failure or any event that could make you doubt your abilities and reason for being on this planet.

One of my favorite chapters in this book is Live Full and Die Empty!

SPECIAL NOTE:
You should not read this book before bed because you will not get to sleep! Instead, you will get up, take a reassessment of your dreams, set goals and be on your way and over any mental slump you thought you may have had.

This book should a staple and reference in your "Pick-me-up" library!
